Here you can read about the thoughts we had, the investigations and preparations we made before Manuel came to us.
Goushi Best in ShowTuesday, 21 March 2006 Today we heard that Goushi had became BIS at the show called Club du chiens nordiques et spitz du japon which was held in Mont Lucon last week-end. 63 Akitas entered. So our Manuel has some expectations to live up to. But honestly we get more disappointed if we fail to raise a mentally and socially well behaved dog.
The problem with the success of Goushi is of course the risk of him being too popular. Which means that his blood will be spread into many lines...Manuel will not be so unique... This summer Silvia will mate Goushi with Asayake. That sounds really really interesting and promising, at least on paper. One never knows. /Charlotte Hotel booking is now okMonday, 10 April 2006 A request for exemption is now sent to Swedish Board of Agriculture. This is required according current rules and regulations, enabling the import of a young puppy that has not yet gotten rabies shots with at all. I hope it will be approved without any further questions. The regulations say that one should apply at least 30 days prior to planned date of entering Sweden. So it is 56 days from now, which I believe should be more and enough then...
After discussions back and forth we finally decided that I should stay one night in Spain when fetching the puppy in June. The alternative whould have been that Silvia came to the air-port with the pup, and I returned back with the next flight. But if one has the chanse to visit the kennel, and the dogs that small amount of extra money should not stop me from doing that. At 00.15 last night I sent a request via Internet to hotell Dato in Vitoria-Gasteiz. This morning I had received the confirmation in my mail-box. Internet for sure contracts the world. I have alreday received detailed road descriptions using http://www.viamichelin.com/. The hotel is fairly small and cheap (31€) and seems to have a lot of cultural heritage. I think this will work out just fine. I will stay there for one night, and that's it. /Charlotte Jeppe StridhTuesday, 11 April 2006 It feels very strange to book a training course already now. We do not even own a dog yet! But it is the same with kids I believe. You choose day-care before the baby is born. Talking about day-care, that is also one thing we need to check. We like the day-care where Golda the Vorsteh stays sometimes. I have sent an e-mail to trainer Jeppe Stridh where I tell him we are interested to attend his courses. He has a tv-show right now, and even if many do not like him, I believe there will be a rush when it comes to his courses. /Charlotte SAS and the djungle of insurance companiesWednesday, 12 April 2006 Now we are totally engaged in the big science of incurances. What is the best, not to complicated, cheapest? Clear to us is that the best equals not the cheapest, but we have also noticed that the difference of the price, between good, and very good is not that much. So it will probably be a very good one... I was planning to call SAS and get a written confirmation regarding the price for the freight of a dog from Spain. It is supposed to be 100 €, but according to information we got before it could vary between 15€ and 100€ per kilo! (Why is the abbreviation for Euro EUR?.) Oh by the way, I forgot to call SAS, I wll do that on Tuesday. /Mikael The puppies are now 10 daysSunday, 16 April 2006 We are slightly worried about the colour of the puppies. It seems that the females are the darkest ones, not the males. The dog that is the darkest is the one with a hugh white spot in the neck. We have all the time thought about a red male, without any big white spots. We wanted a real red male, not a beige male, nor a red female. /Charlotte Anguish Anguish AnguishMonday, 17 April 2006 UUUh difficult decisions ahead! Maybe I have made a small blunder. Today I talked to Karin at the Amateraso No kennel - again. She and her husband Inge are amazing, being there for us every time I call, now and then, asking all kinds of questions. Karin had a look at the pictures of the 10 days old puppies. The ones that are almost black now, will be really really red, like Goushi, and the ones slightly lighter will be like Tore. So it seems that all of the puppies will have a clearly approved red colour. Some of the puppies will be really really red, some have white spots that might not disappear. Now it is up to us to find the puppy with "it". Currently it seem to be a female that is the darkest, and with a nice headshape. In a few weeks we will be able to see and judge the quality better. I am hoping for some film clips. Karin mentioned that I should check so that they were not to narrow over the hips, (though the breed already are fairly straight angled in the hip). Vi have discussed the fact that it might be a female that is the best puppy, and need to think about how will act in case of that possible scenario. It worries me that I have defined the gender in the request for exemption is to the Swedish Board of Agriculture. I wonder if that is of importance. On the other hand, I did read that the information required was: species, breed and chip-id. I believe that I sometimes is too meticulous when it comes to paper-work and that this actually could be a disadvantage. My hopes are that when the approval arrives, it is formulated in a way where gender is not defined. If not, I will have to call them to see if we can sort this out. But we are talking bureaucracy here... so one never knows. /Charlotte Such a mess!Wednesday, 19 April 2006 To fly a dog from Spain to Sweden does not appear to be that difficult, actually. You just need to be prepared in time, knowing the weight and measurments of the dog and cage. Getting to know how much it will cost, is on the other hand a real challenge! I have talket to SAS three times. Every time I have received different kind of information. It has varied between 100 EUR totally to 100 EUR/kilo, ie. more than 10000 SEK. Finally I got the advice to contact Spanair directly. I have done so, and of course I got yet another price! The dog and cage is included in the normal luggage, and you will pay any possible overweight according to normal fee - 4 + 8 EUR / kilo (depending on if domestic or abroad). Iis this so hard for the company that books the flight to give us this information??? (SAS) /Mikael He can become a sheThankyou dear Ingela for making me pop the question to the Swedish Board of Agriculture. It scared me a bit, since I feared I had to start all over again with the paper-work if changing one single detail. Today I got a reply from Swedish Board of Agriculture saying that "chaning sex" of the puppy was no problem. ("change of sex" - that sounds absurd). The breed and the ID och the chip is the important facts. I am worried that Silvia who owns the kennel in Spain, might forget/misunderstand the instructions about worming. But now I have a back-up. I could enter Sweden, but will need to drive directly to a vet. Of course I will remind Silvia about the rules, it is just that the project manager within me says; if something can go wrong, prepare for it, eliminate it. /Charlotte Application approved!!!Sunday, 23 April 2006 Yup, now it is decided. Our application has been approved. We are now allowed to bring in an Akita puppy from Spain, which is younger than 3 months, and has not been given shots for rabies. That went fast! On the other hand, I believe I put a lot of effort in creating the application in a clear and proper way. I did not want anything to be missed out! Our puppy can enter Sweden between the 6th of June until the 6th of July. /Charlotte Day-careIngela and Björn sometimes put Golda at a day-care center. It is called Stjärnelunds and is situated in the Burlöv commune. It is very nice, and I have started to investigate our options. Close to the autumn Manuel must have somewhere booked. Many places are fully booked. /Charlotte Positive feed-back from "Gunillas Djurhotell"I will probably start working in Helsingborg. Then a day-care between Malmö and Helsingborg would be perfect! I sent an e-mail to Gunilla last night, and received an anwser this morning. We were welcome to pay a visit within 2-3 weeks. She wrote that an Akita puppy was very welcome. We have found out that some places do not welcome Akitas... Her web-site looks ok, and the information we can find, but the most important is to go there and see for ourselves. /Charlotte
